Myths About Stone Cookware

Stone Cookware can be highly efficient if correctly used. However, there is a myth about these pans. This causes misconceptions and false expectations for people new to stone cookware.

Stone Cookware Is Not Made From Real Stone

Stone Cookware is not actually made from any type of stone at all.

Rather, stone cookware consists of a stainless steel or aluminum core with a PTFE or ceramic coating:

  • Ceramic coating is not pure ceramic but is a sol-gel compound (1). This sol-gel coating can be mixed with diamond. Or has a stone-like appearance (usually granite or marble).

Some examples include Blue Diamond, which uses diamond in its coating. Michelangelo is an imitation marble ceramic coating. Ilag, a stoneware manufacturer, explains the process on their site (2).

Their granite coating “Granitec” is sol-gel and manufactured to look like granite. See their Sensarte stone frying pan.

  • PTFE coating looks like stone, though there is no stone in its composition. For instance, Ozeri uses a PTFE coating that resembles stone.
  • However, ancient men did use stones to heat their food. And today, the only stone in modern kitchens is found in certain accessories.

How Stones Were Used to Cook

Cavemen had to use whatever they could find to cook their meals before cookware was even thought of. Often this meant stacking stones and reeds over a fire or pile of embers. This technique traps heat to cook the meat.

Certain tribes like the Dani in Indonesia still continue this ancient tradition (3).

There is also an ancient practice called “stone boiling”. It involves placing super-heated stones in liquid to cook soup or stew (4).

So, Are Any Stones Used in a Kitchen?

You can find some pieces made of stone in the kitchen, usually as utensils or appliances. For example, the Steakstones Sharing Plate is 100% stone. Manufacturers assured us over email that there is no ceramic in its composition.

Likewise, pizza stones are a popular way to cook pizza or bake cookies. The AUGOSTA Pizza Stone for Oven and Grill uses stone technology to ensure a crisp crust every time.

Is Stone Cookware Really Worth It?

We think so, but you should be careful. Stone Cookware doesn’t contain any real stone. They only have the appearance of stone. That being said, there are some benefits.

    non stick cooking icon

    It’s Nonstick

Stone cookware is non-stick thanks to its PTFE or sol-gel ceramic coating. So using stone cookware prevents food from becoming burned and crusty during cooking.

It also allows for quick and easy clean-up afterward since there’s no residue burned onto the pan.

    decorative stone icon

    It’s Aesthetic

Ceramic stone cookware is a generally attractive design thanks to its stone powder mix coating.

Even if aestheticism is a matter of personal choice, cookware like Carote looks like genuine stone. This adds a classic touch to most kitchens.

Features To Consider When Purchasing Stone Cookware

Before shopping for your new stone cookware, make sure you’ve carefully considered the following:

    skillet icon

    Design

First, you’ll want to consult your own taste when choosing stone cookware. There are many attractive designs and colors of stone cookware. Some common colors include red, blue, and grey.

Find the design that best suits your own sense of style and kitchen aesthetic.

    handle pan icon

    Handles

There are several factors to examine in the handles of your stone cookware:

    • Material: The material that makes up the handle may affect your ability to use the stone pan in the oven.

For example, this Caannasweis model may not be used in the oven because of its wooden handles. Some other models feature stainless steel or silicone handles which are oven-safe.

    • Detachable: Some handles detach from the stone cookware. This can be especially helpful if you want to use it in the oven.

But the material of the handles isn’t suitable for that use. This Kdsskj wok pan features a wooden handle that can be detached for oven use.

    • Rivets: There are both riveted and rivetless handle models available. The stone cookware Carote features a handle without rivets.

And the Granitestone handle has rivets. Which type you choose depends on the style you like. But rivetless handles are easier to clean because no food gets stuck in the rivet site.

    Compatibility icon

    Compatibility

Here are some compatibility features to look for in your cookware:

    • Oven Safe: Do you like to finish your stovetop recipes in the oven? Then you’re going to want a brand that holds up to that use.

The ceramic coating will offer safety to a point, but some pieces are not meant to go into a hot oven.

This can be due to the durability of the entire piece, or the lack of a heat-resistant handle. This Michelangelo stone pan is oven safe up to 450°F, while the Cook n Home model is not.

    • Dishwasher Safe: Some delicate pieces are not safe for use in a dishwasher because the ceramic coating can chip off. This Koch system is safe for use in the dishwasher.
But before buying any piece be sure to check with the manufacturer if it is dishwasher safe.
    • Cooktop: Before purchasing any stone cookware, be sure that it’s compatible with your stovetop. For example, an induction stovetop is only compatible with induction-ready cookware. And glass top stoves may be scratched by cookware if it’s not flat-bottomed.

This Chefio pot is compatible with any cooktop. But the Granitestone set doesn’t work on an induction stovetop. Check manufacturer’s specs before purchase.

    brand icon

    Brand

Finally, before purchasing, compare and contrast the best stone cookware brands.

    Ozeri

Ozeri cookware offers a modern look with durable construction. From their beginnings as a boutique supplier to high-end hospitality markets, they grew to encompass the lux home goods market for every kitchen.

The Ozeri brand is built on both a modern aesthetic and healthy living philosophy. They offer quality stone cookware like the Stone Earth Frying Pan.

    Carote

Carote is a line of quality, Swiss design cookware. First selling in the EU and China, they expanded to the United States in 2018. Their cookware is sold directly from the factory and cuts out the middleman.

Look for their Swiss imported Granite stone coating made by ILAG, sold on Amazon.

    Swiss Diamond

Swiss Diamond uses their patented diamond technology to create some of the best stone cookware available. It’s recommended by the Cooking Club of America. And it has been named “the Rolls Royce of non-stick frypans” by the Wall Street Journal.

Swiss Diamond uses diamond crystals to create a line of award-winning non-stick cookware like this saute pan found on Amazon.

    Stoneline

Stoneline strives to offer the very best stone cookware at an affordable price. They’re both non-stick and extremely scratch-proof. So you can rest assured that you won’t have to worry about the deterioration of your coating.

Avoid using extra oil when cooking with Stoneline cookware, like this frying pan.

    Baccarat

This Australian company was established in 1985. It has held the #1 spot in Australian cookware for over 30 years.

They began with a passion for safe cookware. But have since expanded to include knives, textiles, and other kitchen accessories. Their stone cookware is backed by a lifetime guarantee.

    warranty icon

    Warranty

Your warranty terms will depend on what the brand offers. A strong warranty is always helpful in case of defects. But it can be of utmost importance for those who do a lot of cooking or are hard on their cookware.

Ozeri offers a limited lifetime warranty on their products. And Carote offers a limited warranty.

Be sure to check the manufacturer’s website to find details about what kind of warranty they offer. You can also contact the manufacturer directly.
